How to Bring Your Bikes on a Campervan Adventure

Bringing your bikes along adds another way to explore during a campervan trip. From mountain bike trails and scenic coastal routes to a quick ride into the nearest village, having your own bike gives you more freedom once your campervan is parked. At Dutchvanparts, we offer upgrades specifically designed to help you bring your bikes along while making practical use of the space in and around your van.

There are several ways to transport a bike with your campervan, and the differences between the available systems are not always immediately clear. An exterior carrier keeps your garage available for other equipment, while an interior solution allows you to store your bike inside. In this article, we explain how the Cargo Frame and Vertical Bike Carrier work and how each can contribute to your travel setup.

Choosing a bike transport solution for your campervan

The right bike transport solution depends on your bikes, your campervan layout and the way you travel. A lightweight mountain bike creates different loading demands than a heavier e-bike, while a campervan filled with outdoor equipment may have little room left for bicycles inside.

Think about how you want to use your bikes during the trip. If you ride regularly, convenient loading and unloading become an important part of your daily routine. The height at which you load the bike, the space around it and access to your other equipment all influence how practical your setup will be.

Here are two solutions we recommend:

The Cargo Frame

The Cargo Frame provides a versatile platform for carrying regular bicycles outside your campervan, with a maximum total load of 35 kg. It mounts onto a compatible Cargo Ladder and requires separate bicycle carriers, such as the Thule ProRide 598, which are not included. This setup is intended for regular bicycles; for heavier e-bikes, we recommend the Vertical Bike Carrier.

The frame can be positioned above a Cargo Box or mounted lower when the space below is available, making loading easier. With suitable attachments, it can also carry skis or other equipment. A practical upgrade for travellers who want to combine bike transport with a flexible rear storage setup.

The Vertical Bike Carrier

The Vertical Bike Carrier transports one bike upright and is particularly useful for heavier e-bikes. Its Stabilus gas spring helps raise the bike into position, so you do not have to lift its full weight onto the carrier. Simply pull the handle down, place a wheel into the hook and give a gentle push upwards.

The lifting assistance is adjustable for bikes weighing between 10 and 30 kg. Adjustable wheel straps and a lockable axle clamp secure the bike during transport. Up to three Vertical Bike Carriers can be mounted onto one compatible Cargo Ladder. To install three carriers, our Extension Brackets Cargo Ladder are required, providing a practical setup for bringing multiple bikes on your campervan adventures.

Winter does not have to mean parking your campervan until spring. With the right preparation, your camper can take you from snowy mountain roads to remote winter campsites and ski destinations throughout the season. The goal is not simply to add more accessories, but to build a setup that makes your campervan more practical, protected and prepared for winter travel.

Whether you need more room for skis and snowboards, additional protection underneath your Sprinter, improved lighting or a more complete recovery setup, Dutchvanparts offers upgrades designed for adventure-focused campervans.
