A Guide to the names of their types/sizes

In 2017, Volkswagen, in cooperation with MAN, launched a new van and introduced different names to indicate the lengths and heights of these vans. Although the chassis heights and lengths are very similar to those used before 2017, the new naming system can be a bit confusing. To clarify, let us walk you through the sizes, their new names, and how to recognize them.

Sames sizes, different names

In 2017, Volkswagen and MAN introduced a new van, but the chassis dimensions remained largely unchanged. However, they decided to rename the different length and height indications.

For example:

  • The most common L2H2 of the Mercedes Sprinter is called L3H3 by Volkswagen/MAN.
  • The L3H2 of Mercedes is called L4H3 by Volkswagen/MAN.
  • The L4H3 of Mercedes is called L5H4 by Volkswagen/MAN.
  • The L2H1 of Mercedes is called L3H2 by Volkswagen/MAN.

In addition to these exact designations, there is also a more general classification of lengths that is commonly used:

  • Medium Wheelbase (MWB): Equivalent to Volkswagen/MAN L3 (or Mercedes L2).
  • Long Wheelbase (LWB): Equivalent to Volkswagen/MAN L4 (or Mercedes L3).
  • Extra Long Wheelbase (XLWB): Equivalent to Volkswagen/MAN L5 (or Mercedes L4).

Besides the official height indications (H2, H3, H4, H5), the following common terms are also used:

  • Normal roof (often just called “roof”): Equivalent to Volkswagen/MAN H2 (or Mercedes H1).
  • High roof: Equivalent to Volkswagen/MAN H3 (or Mercedes H2).
  • Super high roof: Equivalent to Volkswagen/MAN H4 (or Mercedes H3).
