Selecting the Right Side Steps for Your Sprinter

Choosing the right side steps for your Mercedes Sprinter depends on how your van is built, how you use it, and which doors you want easy access to. Below we explain the shared features of all Sequoia side steps, followed by a clear breakdown of the three available options so you can make the right choice.

Selecting the Right Side Steps for Your Sprinter

What All Sequoia Side Steps Have in Common

All Sequoia side steps are designed for off-road capable campervans and motorhomes and share the following characteristics:

  • Designed for Mercedes Sprinter L2, L3 and L4

  • Stay within the van’s outer dimensions (do not extend beyond the mirrors)

  • Adjustable overhang position (+/- 20 mm) for visual fit

  • Large openings for mud and snow to pass through

  • Minimal loss of ground clearance

  • Aluminium steps and tubes with steel mounting brackets

  • Stainless steel hardware

  • Compatible with 4×4, AWD and RWD Sprinters

  • Not compatible with FWD Sprinters

  • For RWD models, a 50 mm lift is recommended

If your Sprinter has an OEM heater on the driver’s side, minor modifications to the heater exhaust may be required.

The Side Step possibilities

Side Steps (Front + Sliding Door)

Best choice if you want full side protection and easy access to both doors.

This is the most complete side step setup. It provides:

  • A large step at the front door

  • A second step at the sliding door

  • A continuous tube running from the front door to the rear wheel arch

The sliding door step is slightly smaller, improving maneuverability in tight corners while still offering comfortable access.

Left or Right Sliding Door Variant

This configuration is available in two variants:

  • Sliding door on the left side

  • Sliding door on the right side

This allows you to match the side steps exactly to your Sprinter’s door layout.

This setup is ideal for campervans that are frequently used off-road or for daily access through both doors.

Installation:
Uses multiple steel brackets mounted to both the frame and sill. Requires rivet nuts.

Side Steps

Half Moon Side Steps

Best choice if you only need a front door step or have an electric sliding door step.

The Half Moon Steps are designed only for the front doors. They are ideal if:

  • Your sliding door already has an electric step

  • You want improved access without a full-length side step

  • You drive a motorhome on a Sprinter chassis

Key differences:

  • One compact step per side

  • No tube running to the rear wheel arch

  • Uses two brackets per side (one frame + sill, one sill only)

These steps also fit several motorhomes, including Hymer ML-T and Venture S models.

Hymer ML-T Compatibility

Compatibility depends on what is installed underneath the vehicle. We explain exactly when the Half Moon Steps fit and when they don’t in a dedicated article:

We strongly recommend checking this before ordering.

Installation:
Requires blind rivet nuts.

Half Moon Side Steps

Side Steps (Double Sliding Door) Sprinter

Best choice if you want symmetrical steps on both sides, or purely for aesthetics.

This configuration includes:

  • Two identical sides

  • Each side has a front door step and a sliding door step

  • Tubes run from the front door to the rear wheel arch on both sides

Double sliding doors are not required. Many customers choose this option simply because they prefer the visual balance of matching steps on both sides of the van.

Functionally, this option is very similar to the standard Side Steps, but without the left/right difference in step layout.

Installation:
Same mounting method as the standard Side Steps. Requires rivet nuts.

Quick Decision Guide

Choose Sequoia Side Steps Sprinter if you want:

Choose Side Steps (Double Sliding Door) if you want:

  • Full access on both sides of the van

Choose Sequoia Half Moon Side Steps if you want:

  • Front door access only

  • Compatibility with electric sliding steps

  • A lighter, more minimal solution

Combining Sequoia Side Steps with a Side Ladder

If you plan to combine Sequoia Side Steps with a side ladder on your Mercedes Sprinter, an additional component is required.

To ensure both products function correctly together, you must use the Side Ladder Adapter. This adapter replaces the standard side step extension on one side of the van and creates the necessary space to mount the ladder securely.

How it works:

  • The Side Ladder Adapter is installed on the van side without a sliding door

  • It allows the side ladder and side steps to coexist without interfering with each other

  • On the sliding door side, the standard Sequoia side step extension is used

  • This results in a balanced, full-length side step setup with full ladder functionality

Compatibility and installation:

  • Designed specifically for use with Sequoia Side Steps

  • Bolts directly onto the existing side step structure

  • Fits within the van’s outer dimensions, just like the standard side steps

  • Installation requires blind rivet nuts and basic tools

  • Made from an aluminium tube with a steel mounting bracket

  • Uses stainless steel hardware

Without this adapter, a side ladder cannot be properly combined with Sequoia Side Steps.

Important note:
Regulations for side steps and ladders vary by country. It is the responsibility of the vehicle owner to verify local requirements.
